The theatrical activities in Vidin began in 1879 with the establishment of "Vida" Charitable Theatrical Society. The construction of the theater building began with funds collected from the "Vida" Theater Building" Foundation. It was the first of its kind in Bulgaria – built on the Vienna opera model – with a large salon, lodges, galleries, a big stage, orchestra and a glass roof. The opening celebration was on New Year’s Eve in 1891. After reconstruction in 1947 the gallery and the square superstructure on the roof were removed. Through the years many talented Bulgarian artists played on Vidin’s stage. "Vida" Drama theatre is unique with its two stages – the inside one, used during cold months and the open stage in "Baba Vida" fortress in the summer.
